Wholesale Plus Size Nightclub Dresses TORRINGTON - A case of cold feet and some divine intervention have added up to benefit little girls thousands of miles away.
Harwinton resident Joyce Marcotte has turned some extra material and her sewing expertise into sundresses that will benefit children in need in Africa and all it took was a Craigslist deal gone south and some time on the Internet.
Marcotte spent Thursday evening at Northwest Hills Community Church in Torrington with a group of volunteers that have come together to make dress for the Little Dresses for Africa organization. The dresses Marcotte and her friends are making will eventually find their way to countries all over Africa to clothe little girls in need.
An avid sewer all her life, Marcotte has made show clothes for a daughter who rides horses, pocketbooks, clothes, Halloween costumes, you name it. “Whatever phase of life I’m in, I have been sewing something for it,” she said. She even had others interested in her work and had a customer answer an ad she placed on Craigslist for her items.
That deal eventually fell through, the customer disappeared and stopped communicating with Marcotte when they were to finalize the transaction and it left Marcotte at a loss and with a lot of extra fabric.
“It took about two weeks. I was wondering why there was no answer to my emails and where is she,” Marcotte said. “I came across this site and it was instant, it was like God said this is where all that material is supposed to go. I really think it’s divine intervention. I think God had a different plan for me and what I was supposed to do.”
What Marcotte has done is make over 30 dresses already. She was so excited about the project that she took to Facebook to post about it and that got some of her friends involved. Next the pastor at church said she could make an announcement about the project and that got even more people involved.
“I was going to do it myself. I posted what I was doing on Facebook and start making some dresses and my friends joined in and said I want to do that,” Marcotte said.
All told Marcotte has rounded up 20 volunteers who are enthusiastically starting to put dresses together. The group is making four different size dresses, small, medium, large and extra large. The small and medium dresses start as pillow cases and make it possible for even a novice to get one made.
“I haven’t sewn since I was 13 and I’m retired now, but when I finished a dress I felt wonderful,” said Kathy Lawson of New Hartford. “It’s a wonderful cause and it feels good to do something meaningful and useful and to see the smiles on their faces in the pictures when they get their dresses is really rewarding.” Continued...
